Saturday 8th November saw 5 teams take to the field to compete in the 4th annual Jan Kiddle Cup. This cup was introduced by Jan Kiddle to give adult beginners some tournament experience a few months into learning a new sport.
The rules of the tournament are: team sizes are agreed for each match and favour the smaller team and players should have been playing less than 1 year. Any more advanced players can play but are there to assist and guide.
This year was a special year as the club rotation meant Cobham were hosting, Jan's home team. We were joined by Surrey Uni, Kent Uni, UCL, East Grinstead Club and Maidstone Club.
Initial round robin matches had mixed results but with UCL coming top of the table they looked set to do well in the knock-out rounds.
UCL went through to play Uni of Kent who had come 4th in the table, whilst Maidstone took on Surrey Uni. With only 7 players Maidstone had borrowed some players during the day but decided to go it alone since hitting the knock out phases.
UCL and Maidstone went through to the final with UCL having won their semi-final 2-1 and Maidstone beating Surrey 2-0.
Maidstone put in a great performance, particularly as several had never played together before and one of their players only picked up a stick 4 weeks ago! It was a clear 4-1 victory over UCL, with both teams really enjoying the match.
Well done to all teams, it was fantastic to see so many new players out loving lacrosse.
Thank you to those coaches and more advanced players who came along with their teams to help and support them and a big thank you to Cobham for hosting.
Finally thank you Jan Kiddle for introducing this great tournament, the South East is very proud to host this for our new lacrossers and hopes to see many more teams in the future.
